DESIGN CHALLENGE
The new 100 Bar + Kitchen restaurant in Edmonton, Alberta recently opened for business in a multi-story historic building within the city’s downtown financial district. CK Design Associates, a local interior design firm, was hired to complete the first floor renovation project. To complement its progressive, on-trend persona, the interior design needed to convey distinction and contemporary flair in its upscale restaurant and lounge area. The firm was challenged with the goal of creating an environment that would be conducive to innovative dining as well as seductive nightlife.
SOLUTION
Chris Kourouniotis, principal at CK Design, worked closely with the restaurant’s owner, Chris Lachance, to understand his requirements and execute a compelling design vision. As an integral element of the design strategy, Kourouniotis specified a dramatic wallcovering from the Len-Tex Black & White Collection to create a unique personality for the restaurant and to complement the clean, sleek interior furnishings of the space.
“We needed a unique wallcovering, one that would make a bold statement and add interest to the area,” explained Kourouniotis. “It was also important to choose a design that would not be outdated quickly in terms of color and pattern. The Len-Tex Black & White Trinity pattern was the ideal choice.”
Trinity, in Midnight Black, a charcoal/black tone-on-tone stylized damask wallcovering was chosen for the hostess area and main dining room. A second colorway, Piano Keys, a high contrast black and white in the same pattern was chosen for the ceilings of the hallway and two restrooms, further harmonizing the high impact black and white theme throughout the space.
Professional installers Eunice and Frank Bokstrom of Edmonton completed the challenging wallcovering installation with its curved walls and high ceilings. The
Len-Tex wallcovering handled and performed beautifully, allowing them to perfect their craftsmanship for a spectacular end result. This installation earned the husband and wife team an award in the 2009 NGPP Winning Walls with Wallcoverings commercial category.
RESULTS
Local media reviews applaud the stylish design appeal of the 100 Bar + Kitchen as the city’s up and coming nightspot. The interior redesign has created an ambiance of warm, genuine hospitality, and owner Lachance remarks, “The end result was exactly what we were looking for. A distinctive and welcoming design combining a rich color scheme accented with a dramatic wallcovering, leather seats and crystal chandeliers. We’ve created an atmosphere that encourages social interaction and supports our brand promise of providing innovative dining and seductive nightlife.”
